| If you're here it means you need to learn how to use mIRC to connect to the Soul Assassins chatroom. |
| Just follow this step-by-step tutorial and you'll be up and running in to time. |
| You can click below to be taken to different sections. |
| Installation Setup Connecting and Joining Nick Registration Advanced |
| Installation |
| Step 1 | First off you need to get yourself mIRC if you don't already have it. You can just click here and select a location to download it. | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Step 2 | Once you have finished downloading it, simply find the file you just downloaded and double click it. (The filename is mirc614.exe) | ||||
|
If you are running Windows XP and don't have administrator privileges (you'll know it if you don't), this is about where you stop. Until you get the administrator to set it up for you, there is nothing more you can do. Ask your parents/brother/sister or whoever runs the computer to help you with it. | ||||
| Step 3 | If you're an administrator just install it wherever it asks you to, which is normally C:\Program Files\mIRC. Let that finish up, then move on to the next step. | ||||
| Step 4 | Now we are ready to actually do something. Open mIRC by double-clicking the icon on your desktop or by finding it in the Start Menu. When it is open and running move on to the Setup section. |
| Step 5 | This next step is unique to the Darkfire server. They use a system called DVS to make sure people aren't having bots run and spam every channel that exists in their network. Before you actually use their server, you need to register your nick using their DVS system. Click here to go to the Darkfire DVS page. | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Step 6 | Register your nick with DVS. Be sure to remember the DVS password and user password you register with. You will need them in the next steps so write them down. | ||
| Step 1 |
Now we're going to set up mIRC for the first time. When you first open mIRC you will see the following window. To most of you this will be confusing as hell, but don't worry, it's not as hard as it looks. For now we will focus on the Options window since we need to change a few things. |
|
|
| Step 2 |
|
In the options window on the Connect Options you see the above screen. The only things you will need to change here are the Nickname and Alternative boxes. This is where you pick the nickname you will be known by on IRC. The Alternative box allows you to set a second nickname to be used if your normal nickname is already in use. So, fill those in and on to the next step. | |
| Step 3 |
When you click on Options in the left pane, you will get this window. Here you will make sure you uncheck the Connect on Startup, Pop up connect dialog on startup, and Move to top of list on connect boxes. You should also check the Reconnect on disconnection box. Everything else, leave as it is. |

|
| Step 4 | There are other options we can change here to make our lives easier, but I will go more into that in the Advanced section. So, click OK and move on to the next section. | ||
| Step 1 | Now that we have the options set and you've picked your nicknames, we're ready to connect to the SA chat. | ||
| |
You'll see this screen after the last section. This is called the Status Window and is where most of connecting and joining takes place. On our forums you will have found some addresses that to you mean nothing, but to IRC they are where you connect and what room you join. | ||
| Step 2 | To connect to our server, all you need to do is type "/server darkfire.net 6667 " (no quotes) and hit Enter. You will see a bunch of text scroll through the window, just don't pay any attention to it unless it says "Unable to find server" or any other message that would indicate you couldn't connect. Once you are connected, we can move on to Step 3. | ||
| NOTE: | If you are using AOL or some other non-broadband or dial-up ISP, you must first connect to your ISP before you try to use IRC. Simply run AOL, etc. like normal and then minimize that window and start IRC. | ||
| Step 3 | Now that you are connected, you have to tell IRC what room to join. Do this by typing "/join #SA" without the quotes and hitting Enter. | ||
| Step 4 | If all went well, a new window will pop up and you will see a list of names on the right side, along with a large window on the left. It looks much the same as the Status Window, but this is the chat room. Congratulations, you made it through.
If you need to connect again at a later time, you simply type the same two commands you did this time and it will take you to the room. Or, you can read on into the Advanced sections and learn how to set it up so that IRC does all this automatically. |
||
| Step 5 | You might have noticed that, along with the main chat window, another window popped up that should be flashing the word "Nickserv" on and off. This is what we call, well, Nickserv. It allows you to register your nickname so that only you may use it. I will cover this in the next section, so read on. | ||
| Step 1 | Now that you've got the Nickserv window up, you can register your nick. | ||
| Step 2 | In either the main chat or the Nickserv window type "/msg nickserv register PASSWORD DVS" (without quotes) but be sure you replace PASSWORD with what you want your password to be and DVS with your DVS key. Then hit Enter. | ||
| Step 3 | Your nick is now registered. Each time you connect to the Soul Assassins server, the Nickserv window will pop up and ask for your password. Just type "/msg nickserv identify PASSWORD" in the window and that's the end of it and you can close the window. | ||
| NOTE: | Don't forget to replace PASSWORD with your own password and DVS with your own DVS key. This will ensure that no one else may take your nick from you. | ||
| Step 4 | You are now done. You know how to connect to the SA server, join the SA chatroom and also how to register and identify yourself using Nickserv. If you'd like to see how to make this whole process easy on you, read the next section. | ||
| Step 1 | If you're still reading this, you must want to make this easier (or harder) on you. One of the major features of mIRC is the ability to run scripts from your client to automate processes and make it quicker and easier to use.
The first thing we need to do is open the Aliases window. In the picture you can find the Aliases window by looking for the button highlighted in red. Click that and move on to Step 2. |
![]() |
|
| Step 2 | Once in the Aliases window you will see several tabs at the top of the window. These are Aliases, Popups, Remote, Users, and Variables. Right now we're going to work with Aliases. | ||
| Step 3 | Scroll down in the aliases window on the right side as far as you can. At the bottom of the list, type "/id /msg nickserv identify PASSWORD" without the quotes. Once again, replace PASSWORD with your nickserv password. This enables us to type just "/id" instead of the entire Nickserv identify command. Isn't that nice? | ||
| Step 4 | Now we get to the fun stuff. We are going to use a remote script to automate everything we've covered so far. While in the Aliases window, click on the Remote tab. You'll see a big empty white box. Move on to Step 5. | ||
| Step 5 | In the Remote box, you are going to copy and paste the following text: | ||
| NOTE: | Don't forget to change PASSWORD to your Nickserv password. | ||
| Step 6 | Now, because of that script, whenever you start mIRC, you will automatically be connected to the SA server, join the SA chat room, and have your password entered into Nickserv. So, you don't have to do anything but chat. | ||
|
Well, that's it. You've done about all I'm going to teach you. If you are completely stuck (which you shouldn't be) you can email me and ask whatever questions you have. Please, do not ask how to install things if you are not an administrator or where you downloaded your mirc614.exe to. I'm not going to take my time to answer the questions of people who didn't take their time to read this tutorial. |
